I am not sure about the process, but in general you turn off color management, scan the IT-8 traget with the scanner and develop a profile using software designed for that purpose. I have read several post from people who are using Nikon Scan and using a scanner profile to correct the color of the image. I am scanning color negatives, so have not tried to generate color profiles for the scanner. I have tried VueScan and don't like it - with Nikon Scan I get all the features avaialble on the scanner. I try to scan everything using the batch scan available in Nikon Scan and have the scanner save the images in a folder. I have a Nikon 9000 and scan using Nikon Scan. Make sure that you also have a calibration device to calibrate your screen, whatever quality, size or brand EVERY screen need to be calibrate with a device, not just with a Adobe Gamma. Its a matter of what you like and what you already know. So maybe with a expensive device you could have a relay good scanner profile, but since not all the neg are expose the same you will in a way need to recalibrate it everytime you change neg, exposure, development etc.Īs for the Mac vs PC, liek i said, anything that can drive your scanner will do, if a Xbox had the driver, you could also use it : ) I also have a Imacon Flextight III that i never had a custom profile made, yet always get as is result, again by turning off any auto adjustment. I never create a external profile for my epson and always get amazing, close to what i see on the slide or neg turning off the auto feature, and selecting some minor adjustment in the epson software. The Nikon 9000 is a great scanner and you will love the results you will be getting, but scanning thousands of slides will take up a lot of your time - so get ready to make a big time committment.ĭepending of the tools you use to create a profile for your scanner, yes that could helps a lot. I was all set to use Vuescan with the 9000, but ended up using the Nikon software instead - for me at least it is easier and more intuitive and I get better results without a lot of tweaking in the software. Before you buy Silverfast, you should first try the Nikon supplied software - they now have special settings for Kodachrome and the results are excellent. Scanning will take some time getting good at - it is a steep learning curve. I run the scanner with Windows XP, 4 GB of RAM and tons of free storage (one terrabyte) and a dual core Intel setup. Quote: "I just want the fastest scans possible"Ĭhristopher, speed in scanning is relative - do NOT believe any of the published speed ratings for the various scanners - I own the Nikon 9000 and love it, but the advertised speed is nowhere near what I am getting and I have seen similar posts here on pnet from other users.
